Definition: Responsible for a variety of professional library services including reference, reader's advisory, programs and selection of library materials to meet the needs of library customers with a focus on services to preschoolers and elementary age children
Essential Functions:
- Plan and coordinate programs and services for children
- Present weekly story times and other literature-based programs for children and their caregivers
- Promote library services to the community through education and outreach
- Assist customers by providing reader's advisory services, basic reference and directional assistance in person, over the telephone and by e-mail
- Assist customers in use of reference sources, electronic databases, computers and other library machinery
- Plan, coordinate and implement summer reading program with other library staff
- Provide support for the educational, recreational and informational needs of children through reader's advisory services and collection development
- Evaluate and select materials for an assigned area of the collection
- Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
- Develop cooperative programs and serve as liaison between the public library and the schools, community organizations and community groups dedicated to serving children
- Prepare publicity materials, displays and bulletin boards to promote the library and services
- Conduct library orientation tours and community outreach for individuals or groups
- Record statistical information as needed
- Supervise volunteer scheduling and activities
- Explain library policy to the public as needed
- Participate in system committees
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
- Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science or Information Studies from an ALA accredited college or university

Preferences:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
- Prior experience with an automated library system
- Prior experience in public speaking or presenting programs
- Prior experience in early childhood and literacy development
Conditions of Employment:
- Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
- Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
- Must be able to reach above shoulder level and stoop below knee level
- Must be legally sighted and able to hear to be able to assist customers
- Must be able to work a rotating schedule including nights and weekends
- Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required
