    Job Description

    Under supervision of the Assistant City Librarian for  Access services, the Senior Librarian provides creative management and coordination of a library service section (Technical Services) and leads, supervises, and empowers section staff. This position is customer-service oriented and charged with evaluating, developing, and providing services, collections, access and/or programs that are of interest and responsive to the community. Participates in administrative decision-making and strategic planning for the library. Assists with the preparation, administration, and monitoring of the section budget.

    • Employs and models the Library's mission and vision, as well as the values, ethics, and principles of the library profession.
    • Supervises, recruits, selects, trains, appraises, leads, empowers, and counsels section personnel.
    • Effectively evaluates, coordinates, and prioritizes section activities.
    • Assists in decision making and development of departmental strategic plans, goals, and budget.
    • Monitors and accounts for section expenditures following City and Library policies and procedures.
    • Assesses and responds to diversity in user needs, user communities, and user preferences.
    • Evaluates, manages, and maintains library collections with the awareness of community needs and interests and the concepts and issues behind the lifecycle of information.
    • Assists patrons with access to library collections, technologies, and services.
    • Applies and seeks out appropriate technologies and tools to provide quality services.
    • Promotes and demonstrates the value of Library services, such as through marketing and advocacy efforts.
    • Collaborates with colleagues to provide services and programs.
    • Develops and applies knowledge on current library trends and best practices.
    • Performs others related duties as assigned and in support of the Library's and City's mission.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • At least three years of professional library experience
    • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science
    • Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.

    • Community served, including needs, interests, and trends
    • Library trends and best practices
    • Information literacy, including research methods and source evaluation, and professional reference and readers' advisory techniques
    • Methods for planning, implementing, and assessing library collections, services, and programs
    • The principles and systems for information organization and retrieval
    • Current consumer software, hardware, and web-based platforms, such as the Microsoft Office Suite, handheld electronic devices and eReaders, social media platforms, email clients, or publishing tools
    • Library technology solutions, such as integrated library systems, radio-frequency identification systems, online public access catalogs, or data communication protocols

    Skill in:

    • Effective leadership of people with diverse backgrounds and abilities
    • Clear written and verbal communication
    • Project planning and time management
    • Conflict resolution and diplomacy
    • Cataloging with RDA standards and MARC 21 format

    Ability to:

    • Explain policies, procedures, and expectations 
    • Transfer and apply knowledge and experience to new situations
    • Work effectively in a shared decision-making environment as a team member and section leader
    • Excel in an environment that requires flexibility through informed decision-making and risk-taking
    • Communicate effectively with library materials vendors
    • Monitor expenditures to ensure accurate accounting and
      stewardship of tax-payer funds
