    Remote storage book courier/Circulation assistant, hourly, part-time

                                    

    Purpose of the job:   

    To manage the circulation of material, primarily involving the pickup and delivery of remote storage books, shelf reading and book stack maintenance.

     

    Essential duties and responsibilities: 

    • The primary responsibility is to serve as the lead courier to the library's remote book facility.  This involves driving to and from the library's remote book facility, transporting books between the library and the remote storage facility, shelving books, ensuring orderly shelving of the book collection.
    • Courier deliveries will occur at a minimum of once per day.
    • A secondary responsibility may include work at the library's circulation desk.  While this is not the expected daily responsibilities, this staff member could be called upon to work some shifts at the circulation desk.  This may involve the following tasks: 
    • Ensure all patrons either scan or sign in upon entrance at the library
    • Ensure the efficient circulation of library materials
    • Supervise stack maintenance and general upkeep of the library collection
    • Enter and remove comments, fees, blocks, account holds and other information stored on University databases related to library patron circulation records
    • Collect fines
    • Handle circulation problems to include tracking down lost and missing material
    • Handle patrons' complaints and problematic accounts
    • Check and respond to "hold" requests
    • Work in cooperation with reference and interlibrary loan departments
    • Provide directional information to patrons (maps, events, etc.)
    • Other responsibilities as assigned

     

     Supervisory responsibilities:

    There are no supervisory responsibilities.

     
    Fiscal responsibilities:  No fiscal responsibilities.

      

    Knowledge and skills required:

    Bachelor's degree.

    Library work experience preferred.

    Excellent customer service and communication skills

    Excellent organizational skills

    Reliability and punctuality

    Able to work flexible hours

    Computer literacy

    Disposition to work cooperatively with the staff of other library departments

    A valid driver's license.

     

    It is required that the employee's personal automobile be used in the transport of library books.  Mileage reimbursement in accordance with current federal guidelines.

     

    Working conditions:

    Part-time hourly position, sixteen hours per week, fall and spring semesters.  Hourly wage, no benefits.  Flexible work schedule will be set within the 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, Monday-Friday or Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm schedule window.  The exact schedule will be set by the direct supervisor in consultation with the employee.  This schedule may vary from semester to semester.  Some bending, lifting, stooping required in an office environment.  A current valid driver's license is required.
