    Description

    Under administrative direction of the Assistant City Manager, the Library Director holds a leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, overall management, and daily operations of the library. This position requires a dynamic, forward-thinking individual who can advocate for the library within the community and lead the library in alignment with its mission and goals, through the promotion of services, programs, and activities. The Library Director will ensure the delivery of high-quality services and act as staff liaison to the Library Advisory Board.

    Essential Duties

    • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the library that aligns with community needs and library industry trends

    • Oversee the management of library operations, including budgeting, planning, and policy development

    • Represents the Library and serves as city liaison to the Library Advisory Board, and as an ex-officio member of Friends of the Library Association

    • Interacts with public, civic, educational and private organizations in the development and delivery of Library services, programs and activities

    • Provide effective, supportive supervision of Library personnel, including hiring, training, performance appraisal, and personnel record keeping. Promotes the well-being of staff.

    • Cultivate partnerships and maintain effective relationships with community organizations, schools, and government agencies

    • Advocate for the library and actively seek funding opportunities through grants, donations, and other revenue sources

    • Represent the library at city council meetings, professional associations, and public events

    • Ensure the library's collection development strategy is diverse, current, and responsive to community interests

    • Integrate emerging technologies and digital resources to enhance library services and access

    • Direct the planning and execution of library programs that engage various community demographics

    • Evaluate library services and programs for effectiveness and implement improvements as needed

    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws affecting library operations

    • Promote and uphold the library's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

    Education, Certifications, Licenses & Experience

    • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association accredited institution

    • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in a library setting and(2) years of supervisory experience required

    OR  Equivalent combination of experience and education equivalent to an MLS and provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Comprehensive knowledge of library management, program development, and strategic planning

    • Library classification and reference systems

    • Methods, policies, practices, principles and procedures of professional library work

    • Emerging library technologies and library information technologies

    • Skill in supervision of staff, analysis of library issues

    • Skill in budget preparation and management 

    • Skill in delegating responsibilities and resources

    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate staff and volunteers

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective community engagement

    • Proficiency in using library automation systems, electronic resources, and IT infrastructure

    • Ability to analyze data for informed decision-making and problem-solving

    • Experience in grant writing and fundraising activities

    • Knowledge of current trends in library services, including digital transformation and user experience

    • Skill in managing change and fostering an innovative work environment


    Physical Demands
    This position is primarily sedentary, requiring an individual to sit at a desk for long periods of time, working on a computer. 
    Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
