    Position Title: Librarian II - Branch Librarian (Northwest) 

    Location: Amarillo, Texas 

    Salary: $37,862 - $53,086 DOQ 

    Division: Library 

    Department: 1260 – Library – Admin 

    Employment Type: Full time 

    Hours/Days: Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend work, rotating Fridays and Saturdays and one assigned Sunday every four weeks.

    Job Description 
     

    Under the supervision of the assistant director of library services, a branch librarian is directly responsible for the operation of a branch library. Branch librarians interview, train, supervise, and evaluate staff. They also make immediate and long-range plans for their branch, and they assist in preparing and presenting programs and displays that promote the Amarillo Public Library and its services. Furthermore, branch librarians represent the branch in conferences with library users, groups, and the general public. They establish and maintain effective relationships with local community groups, and they actively promote their branch within its service area. 

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

    The principal duties and responsibilities for this position follow:

    • Responsible for short and long-range planning and implementation of branch library services. 
    • Trains and supervises branch staff. 
    • Schedules branch staff and delegates duties. 
    • Analyzes workflow and recommends and implements needed changes. 
    • Recommends adult material selections to the technical services librarian and youth items to the youth services coordinator; weeds branch adult collection and supervises weeding and updating of branch youth collections. 
    • Interprets library policies and procedures to staff. 
    • Responsible for the overall physical condition and maintenance of the branch building and its contents. 
    • Assists in the planning and implementation of adult and youth programs and displays that promote the Amarillo Public Library and its services. 
    • Analyzes developments and needs in immediate service area by seeking community input and by other means. 
    • Actively pursues and promotes outreach activities by participation in community affairs and through frequent personal contacts. 
    • Represents branch at conferences, workshops, meetings, and serves on appropriate committees. 
    • Responsible for cash reports, statistical reports, time sheets, and other reports as required. 
    • Must maintain a close working relationship with other library and city departments to effectively perform required duties and to provide maximum service to the community. 
    • Assists patrons, youth and adult, in locating books and/or information by interviewing patrons to ascertain their needs; assists patrons in use of the public access catalog. 
    • Assists in circulation with charging and discharging materials, updating patron files, issuing cards, etc. 
    • Responsible for staff cohesiveness and morale. 
    • Further clarifies policies and procedures that staff cannot explain to public satisfaction. 
    • Submits budget requests for consideration during the annual budget planning process. 


    Required Qualifications  

    Must have a bachelor's degree in a related field plus five years library management experience or comparable supervisory experience. Must have an up-to-date and thorough knowledge of library science techniques, and a wide range of basic knowledge is essential. Must demonstrate initiative, leadership, tact, enthusiasm, and sound independent judgment. 

    Preferred Qualifications 

    A master's degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited program plus two years practical, professional experience in a recognized library is preferred.
