The Genealogy Librarian – Public Service provides quality reference services to library customers through research, in-depth assistance and technical help for the library and its customers. This position requires a familiarity with genealogy records and research methods, but the librarian in this position should be eager to continue their genealogical education to provide excellent frontline customer service, effective genealogical programming, and dedicated community engagement. The Genealogy Librarian oversees the Heritage Lab Maker's Space and must be knowledgeable about archival standards, digitization best practices and technology troubleshooting.
- Essential Functions

- Works at the reference desk and answers customer questions and requests by creating research plans and strategies to answer family history-related questions. Researches in-depth reference requests – in-person and by phone and email.
- Assists, instructs, and helps patrons with the use of computers, databases, digitization equipment and specialized software.
- Helps develop and promote unit and system-wide genealogy programming.
- Organizes and maintains the genealogy collection for optimal usage by library patrons and staff, which may include creating finding aids and other wayfinding and display material.
- Works with local community groups to encourage a broader general appreciation of the materials in the collection and the services the library provides.
- Leads genealogy collection development by finding, evaluating, and selecting new materials for purchase that suit the needs of the community including representation, language, and interest.
- Serve as Person in Charge when assigned.

Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Work:
- Enthusiasm for public engagement and customer service
- Proficient with technology, especially Microsoft Office and database research. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with XML is a plus
- Knowledge of digitization and/or special collections, including collection processing, finding guides and collection maintenance and assessment
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to listen effectively and communicate information to coworkers and customers in way that is understood by each person
- Ability to supervise others, coordinate/assign work schedules, and give instructions
- Basic knowledge of genealogical and historical research techniques
- Knowledge of library policies and procedures
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to organize and follow through on priorities and meet deadlines
Working Conditions and Hazards
Requires frequent walking and bending.
Could be required to lift up to 40 pounds.
Could be required to work nights and/or weekends.
