    Southwestern University has an immediate opening for a Discovery Services Assistant position. This position is responsible for ordering and receiving library materials in various formats and languages, responsible for the day-to-day management of OCLC Worldshare records for materials, database license compliance, periodical collection maintenance, and physical management de-selection of materials. This is a full-time, benefited non-exempt position that reports to the Associate Director Head of Discovery Services.

    Primary Duties:

    • Verify bibliographic information, assign vendors, and conduct searches for in- and out-of-print books, e-books, journals, media, and musical scores; purchase materials in English and French, German, Spanish, and Chinese.
    • Record and track details in library acquisitions/cataloging module to encumber funds, receive materials, adjust prices, invoice, and reconcile discrepancies with the University accounting system.
    • Prepare physical resources for addition to the collection.
    • Order, process, claim and troubleshoot serial resources in all formats.
    • Maintain serial records and collection holdings in WorldShare.
    • Adhere to university purchasing rules; holds University corporate card and purchasing authority; reconciles statements and receipts monthly.
    • Use the "Get It!" system to manage materials requests from faculty and students in cooperation with the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator.
    • Verify the accuracy of bibliographic records and online access links in Worldshare.
    • Sign for deliveries and monitor the library loading dock.
    • Develop and maintain beneficial work relationships with vendors, University Business Office and administrative computing, faculty, students, librarians, and other staff.
    • Assist with the deselection process and coordinate the disposal of withdrawn materials.
    • Prepare honors theses, paperbound books, and journal issues for binding.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Other projects as assigned.

     

    Requirements:

    • High School diploma.
    • One or more years of Library or purchasing experience.
    • High level of competence using personal computers, software including Word and Excel, and web browsers.
    • Ability to work with great attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Experience working with the public with excellent customer-service skills.
    • Ability to lift and move boxes up to 50 pounds.
    • Willingness to adhere to the University's core values.
    • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.
    • Demonstrated professional manner with all internal and external University constituencies.
    • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce reliable work products.
    • Understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty.
    • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.

     

    Preferred Position Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree, Associate's Degree, or some college coursework.
    • Academic library experience.
    • Library acquisitions experience.
    • Experience with and knowledge of library business systems or the book trade.
    • Reading familiarity with Spanish or French.
