    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    Under general direction of the Director of Library Services, to plan, organize, coordinate, and perform responsible advanced professional library work and administration of a branch library. Functionality evaluated by review of plans, programs, reports, and in conferences.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    Exercises direct supervision over professional, technical and clerical staff.

    IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    1. Supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule branch staff to ensure policies and procedures are followed; customers are given efficient, prompt, and competent assistance, and pleasant working conditions are maintained.

    1. Conduct all branch operations in accordance with City and Library policy and procedures.

    1. Participate in reference and reader advisory services, as well as circulation and shelving activities.

    1. Develop and maintain a well-organized materials collection by making recommendations for new and retrospective materials and by purging the collection of obsolete and/or worn materials.

    1. Discuss work methods, problems, short and long-range development and/or plans.

    1. Compile, prepare, and maintain essential reports, records, and statistics. Submit monthly report of branch activities to library administration.

    1. Identify the characteristics of the branch service area in order to recommend materials and to plan and present needed programs and services.

    1. Participate in the budget preparation process by submitting recommendations for equipment, personnel, and supplies.

    1. Remain aware of building and grounds needs to maintain an attractive and safe facility. Report any facilities problems immediately.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:

    Principles and practices of current library operations.

    Reference sources, current literature, trends, and developments appropriate to branch collection development and providing programs and services.

    Library collection classification and selection tools and techniques, as well as the principles and practices of office management, work organization, and supervision skills.

    Online electronic databases and current technologies for the purpose of statistics reports, library procedures and promoting library resources and programs for the public.

    Skill to:

    Efficiently and effectively interact with the general public, staff and internal customers to provide exemplary library service and programming.

    Monitor financial needs of the branch library and advocate for resources as part of the annual budgeting process.

    Use independent judgment and initiative.

    Ability to:

    Train and supervise others.

    Plan and schedule the workflow of professionals and clerical staff.

    Analyze problems and to recommend practical solutions.

    Use tact and courtesy with the public.

    Perform library functions via automated public catalog and circulation system and implement back-up procedures when necessary.

    Use good judgement in the daily supervision of services.

    Express ideas effectively orally and in writing.

    Meet deadlines and be service oriented.

    Work flexible hours including nights and weekends.

    Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

    Experience and Training Guidelines:

    Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

    Experience:

    Four (4) years of experience in professional library work including two (2) years of supervisory experience is preferred.

    Education/Training:

    Graduation from an ALA accredited college or university with a Master's degree in library sciences or information science is required.

    License or Certificate:

    A valid Texas driver's license, or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required

    Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

    Ability to stand, sit, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

    With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
