    Job Summary
    Performs highly complex (senior-level) library work. The Reader Consultant provides library-focused services in the Reader Services department of the Talking Book Program. Responsibilities include providing library service via telephone, email, and postal correspondence to patrons who have visual, physical, and reading disabilities in a call center environment. Works under limited supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    Essential Tasks
    Communicate primarily by telephone with blind and print disabled readers to provide library service.
    Maintain relevant knowledge of collection, assistive technology, and web-based library software program to provide effective library service. 
    Update database of electronic patron records.
    Monitor patron service records and take appropriate action to ensure continued service.
    Maintain physical patron files.
    Perform other duties as assigned.
    Attend work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
    Comply with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety, standards of conduct, and dress code.

    Other Tasks
    Participates in special projects, as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year institution. Substitution: an associate degree and 2 years work experience in library or customer service environment; or high school diploma or GED and 4 years work experience in library or customer service environment.
    Experience providing service to the public.
    Experience using a computer and standard desktop software.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited program.
    College courses in literature, history, or other humanities.
    Experience taking or making calls in a customer service environment.
    Experience working with computer systems or databases. 
    Experience working with persons with disabilities.
    Experience working in an office/clerical environment.
    Experience working in a talking book library.
    Enthusiasm and interest in promoting library service for readers with disabilities.
    Fluency in Spanish, with ability to converse with patrons and to discuss books effectively in Spanish.
    Braille proficiency.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    Knowledge of books and general public reading interests, with personal interest in reading and ability to discuss books effectively.
    Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
    Knowledge of office procedures and of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic.
    Ability to communicate and interact effectively with members of the public and colleagues, both orally and in writing.
    Ability to complete all job tasks accurately with attention to detail.
    Ability to handle complaints and resolve problems with tact and diplomacy.
    Ability to organize and plan work assignments to ensure daily deadlines are met.
    Ability to work in a call center environment, including ability to work at a desk for extended periods of time, to block out noise from nearby workstations, and to wear telephone headsets with earpieces and mouthpieces.
    Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
    Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.

    Environmental/Physical Conditions
    Normal office work environment. May have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve moving; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; and safely moving items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive motions while operating the computer. Normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies.

    Other Requirements

    Reporting Relationships
    Reports to Manager, Reader Services and works under a Reader Consultant Team Leader.
    This position does not supervise any staff.
