    The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has one opening for this full-time position: Reference Librarian I-II (Commensurate with Experience) - $3,200-$4,000 monthly.

    This librarian position will provide reference assistance to TSLAC patrons. Depending on the length of your experience (paraprofessional/internship/capstone/volunteer experience counts!), you may qualify to be hired at the Librarian I or II level. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recent advanced-degree graduates and early-career librarians to establish and broaden public services and collections management skills.

    Reference Librarian I - $3200 - $3400

    SUMMARY
    Performs routine (journey-level) reference and library services. Work involves providing reference services to patrons of the Texas State Library. Acquires and organizes library resources, conducts research, and provides information and materials in response to requests. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    ESSENTIAL TASKS
    Provides basic reference services and technical assistance to Texas State Library users.
    Conducts library research using known authoritative resources. Conducts lookups and database searches.
    Performs library collection maintenance.
    Applies and enforces established library policies and procedures.
    Assists with collecting library statistics.
    Assists with cataloging tasks and projects related to access. 
    Assists with statewide or federal depository programs or library services.
    Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
    Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures including safety and standards of conduct.

    NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS
    Assists in the selection and acquisition of data, information, and materials for reference staff use.
    Assists with tours, orientations, workshops, and other presentations about holdings.
    Participates in special projects, as assigned.

    Reference Librarian II - $3400 - $4000

    SUMMARY
    Performs moderately complex (journey-level) reference and library services. Work involves providing professional reference services to patrons of the Texas State Library. Acquires and organizes library resources, conducts research, and provides information and materials in response to requests. May train others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    ESSENTIAL TASKS
    Provides professional reference and research services to Texas State Library users.
    Conducts comprehensive library research using authoritative resources.
    Regularly reviews and recommends titles and databases for acquisitions. Recommends library technology.
    Regularly identifies errors or updates to cataloging records as it relates to access. 
    Coordinates library collection maintenance tasks. 
    Applies and enforces established library policies and procedures; assists with the development of library policies and procedures.
    Collects library statistics. 
    Assists with statewide depository programs or library services.
    Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
    Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures including safety and standards of conduct. 

    NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS
    Develops library tools and aids, including bibliographies, finding tools, and research guides.
    Provides tours, orientations, workshops, and other presentations about holdings.
    Assumes lead responsibilities in special projects, as assigned.
    May train others.

    Reference Librarian I - $3200 - $3400

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program.
    Work experience which can include intern, capstone, or volunteer experience equal to at least 6 months providing library public services, such as reference services, interlibrary loan, circulation services, stacks work, or cataloging
    Experience using word processing, database and spreadsheet applications
    Familiarity with library and reference tools, techniques, and services; of standard research sources; and of computer-
    assisted search theories and techniques
    Familiarity with an integrated library system
    Ability to handle several reference queries simultaneously in a high stress environment
    Ability to multi-task, set priorities and perform work independently
    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    Demonstrated ability to make public presentations
    Ability to move boxes weighing up to 40 pounds, kneel, lift, carry, push carts, climb stools or ladders, and sit or stand for extended periods of time
    Ability to work in a team environment

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Experience providing reference services in a library 
    Experience providing reference assistance utilizing state or federal government publications or records 
    Experience providing reference assistance utilizing genealogical or local history resources or local 
    government records
    Experience working in a state or federal documents depository
    Knowledge of U.S. and Texas history and government, as demonstrated in a work environment
    Experience or coursework in library statistics methodology
    Collections management experience in a library setting
    Experience in library outreach or library programming
    Experience using SIRSI Integrated library system 

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application
    Occasional overtime work, including night and weekends may be required
    Must submit writing sample with application; sample should reflect professional business style and be no more than 500 
    words in length
    In-basket exercise will be given at time of interview
    Criminal history check will be required upon contingent offer

    Reports to the Information Services Supervisor. No supervisory responsibility
