    Job Summary
    Performs moderately complex (journey-level) reference and library services. Work involves providing professional reference services to patrons of the Texas State Library. Acquires and organizes library resources, conducts research, and provides information and materials in response to requests. May train others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    Essential Tasks
    Provides professional reference and research services to Texas State Library users.
    Conducts comprehensive library research using authoritative resources.
    Regularly reviews and recommends titles and databases for acquisitions. Recommends library technology.
    Regularly identifies errors or updates to cataloging records as it relates to access. 
    Coordinates library collection maintenance tasks. 
    Applies and enforces established library policies and procedures; assists with the development of library policies and procedures.
    Collects library statistics. 
    Assists with statewide depository programs or library services.
    Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
    Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures including safety and standards of conduct.

    Other Tasks
    Develops library tools and aids, including bibliographies, finding tools, and research guides.
    Provides tours, orientations, workshops, and other presentations about holdings.
    Assumes lead responsibilities in special projects, as assigned.
    May train others.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Master's degree in library and information science from an accredited program.
    One year experience providing professional reference services in a library.
    Experience using an integrated library system.
    Experience using word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience providing professional reference assistance utilizing state or federal government publications or records.
    Experience providing professional reference assistance utilizing genealogical or local history resources or local government records.
    Experience working in a state or federal government documents depository.
    Experience gathering library statistics using standard methodology.
    Experience using the SIRSI integrated library system.
    Collections management experience in a library setting.
    Team lead or supervisory experience in a library setting.
    Experience in library outreach or library programming.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    Knowledge of library and reference tools, techniques, and services; of standard research sources; and of computer-assisted search theories and techniques 
    Knowledge of U.S. and Texas history and government, as demonstrated in a work environment.
    Ability to handle several reference queries simultaneously in a high stress environment.
    Ability to multi-task, set priorities and perform work independently.
    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    Ability to make public presentations.
    Ability to work in a team environment.

    Environmental/Physical Conditions
    Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve moving; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; climbing stools and ladders; performing tasks requiring fine motor skill and coordination to safely move items weighing up to 40 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer.  May require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends as needed. Normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies and interpret data. Travel, some overnight, will be required to conduct training, speak publicly, and attend meetings. Ability to work in a non-smoking environment. 

    Other Requirements
    College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application.
    Must submit writing sample with application; sample should reflect professional business style and be no more than 500 words in length.
    In-basket exercise will be given at time of interview.
    Criminal history check will be required upon contingent offer.

    Reporting Relationships
    Reports to the Information Services Supervisor. No supervisory responsibility.
