    SUMMARY

    Under the direction of the Mayor, manages and oversees all library services within the City.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  Yes

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Supervises staff; sets work priorities; oversees staff work activities; trains staff; conducts formal performance evaluations; initiates disciplinary actions as necessary
    • Develops a monthly calendar; establishes staff work schedules
    • Develops and oversees Library procedures, policies, and operations
    • Reviews policies and ordinances to assure compliance with state regulations
    • Prepares and administers an operating budget; tracks expenditures; orders supplies and books; processes invoices for payment
    • Represents the Library to the Haslet Library Board and Friends of the Haslet Library
    • Performs various activities, including staffing the circulation desk; processing materials; conducting inventories; and "weeding" of materials
    • Establishes and implements Library programs; conducts program evaluations
    • Secures data; analyzes and prepares various activity reports
    • Writes and monitors grants
    • Prepares for and attends various internal/external meetings; may serve as a committee member
    • Exhibits and ensures staff provide effective customer service; responds to e-mails, phone calls and personal visits from patrons
    • Participates in professional development activities to remain informed regarding emerging library trends and new technology
    • Supports the relationship between the City of Haslet and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff, external libraries, vendors, and schools
    • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information;
    • Performs all other duties as assigned

     

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Public library services and operations
    • Directing the work of others
    • Principles and practices of library science, collection development and acquisitions, administrative management, budget administration, grant administration, and marketing and public relations
    • Automated applications for library services
    • Customer service principles and practices
    • Working with library patrons of diverse backgrounds
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master's Degree in Library Science
    • Eight years of experience, including three to five years of supervisory experience, in overall library operations
    • Thorough knowledge of library issues and techniques, must be able to motivate others to provide excellent customer service
    • Interpersonal and communication skills that enables representation of the Library to the community
    • Ability to establish priorities, develop long range plans, including staffing needs for the implementation of new services, programs, or solutions to problems
    • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed in a typical library environment.  While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.  Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and library materials from overhead and from the floor.  Sufficient vision or other powers of observation are essential to permit the employee to read, sort and shelve library materials and maintain patron and cataloging records.  Often times, the employee must move, shelve, and retrieve library materials from high and low settings.   Ability to lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
