    Job Summary

    Under general supervision, responsible for coordinating and improving the programming in all the library facilities, ensuring that the library provides excellent and consistent programs at all library locations.  Hires, trains and supervises all programming staff. 

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

    • As a member of the Library Leadership Team, collaborates with the Director, Assistant Director and Supervising Librarians to deliver high quality library programs to patrons and provide support to Library team.
    • Develops, conducts and manages a comprehensive programming plan for all facilities.  Collaborates with Librarians and Library team to ensure staff receive the necessary training, coaching and mentoring required to provide excellent programming and customer service . 
    • Interviews, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates direct reports, may assist in the process for other library staff.
    • Coordinates and participates in all programs and activities; addresses and resolves customer comments, concerns and /or complaints related to same.
    • Provides customer assistance and reference/reader's advisory services to library patrons; utilizes print, non-print, and electronic resources to respond to patron inquiries, provide reader's advisory assistance, and/or locate library materials.
    • Provides training and/or supervises the work activities of assigned library personnel and/or volunteers as required; prepares staff schedules; recruits volunteers as assigned. 
    • Represents the library in meetings with the public, citizen groups and other agencies. 
    • Assists in application for outside funding for library programs. 
    • Coordinates and provides specialized programs and services to customers such as advisory/reference services and topical programs. 
    • Participates in compiling statistical data and/or developing and updating library policies and procedures as required. 
    • Participates in activities of professional associations as time permits. 
    • Gathers and evaluates data as well as continuously reviewing emerging trends, tools and technologies related to best practices in library programs and services and the customer experience.  Will be a collaborator to implement approved service initiatives.
    • Staffs internal service points as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications

    Education and Experience:
    Master's Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution, and five (5) years programming experience in a library setting , public library experience preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

    Required Licenses or Certifications:

    • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

    Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements

    Required Knowledge of:

    • Principles and practices of quality customer service.
    • Principles and practices of library science
    • Public library operations, services, and policies. 
    • Principles of collection development and maintenance. 
    • Specialized functions relative to area of assignment. 
    • Principles and practices of staff training and development.
    • Principles and practices of supervision.
    • Circulation and reference principles.
    • Library computer systems, software, and databases.
    Required Skill in:
    • Ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons.
    • Responding to public inquiries and complaints regarding library related matters.
    • Providing assistance in performing reference desk functions.
    • Coordinating and performing a variety of professional librarian functions. 
    • Participating in developing and maintaining assigned library collections. 
    • Coordinating and performing specialized functions relative to area of assignment. 
    • Serving as Librarian in Charge and coordinating library operations as required. 
    • Intermediate skills using:  Microsoft Office, web browsing/searching, printing, scanning, copying, faxing and email software. 
    • Fundamental skills using:  mobile devices, smartphones and tablets. 
    • Troubleshooting/problem solving skills.
    Additional Skills and Abilities:
    • This position requires strong interpersonal skills, a working knowledge of general office procedures, the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, flexibility in work schedule, a good sense of humor and a positive work attitude. 
    • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
    Physical Demands / Work Environment:
    • Work is performed in a library environment and is subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
    • Must be able to push loaded book carts and lift/carry library materials and equipment.
    • May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
