    Position Description

    Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

    Librarian II - Collection Development Overview:

    The Collection Development Librarian, under the supervision of the Collection Development Manager, identifies, evaluates, and selects timely, high quality, and diverse materials for library purchase, adhering to a budget. The Collection Development Librarian is expected to work both independently and with other staff and the public to execute varying service priorities for the HCPL system. 


    Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Conducts print, audiovisual, and electronic collection development, maintenance, and evaluation following established guidelines, meets with vendors to review products and services, and exercises professional judgment to identify, evaluate, and select adult and youth library materials in multiple formats, both purchased and donated.
    • Exercises professional judgment to anticipate and meet demand, address customer and staff requests, and respond to community and collection needs.
    • Collaborates with other HCPL departments in support of system programs and initiatives such as Satellite collections, story times, Summer Reading, Gulf Coast Reads, and Bookhunters, as well as HCPL grant projects.
    • Curates content in response to outside events, internal needs, and patron requests.
    • Participates in determining annual budget allocations for adult and youth materials and tracking budgets through provided reports.
    • Participates in system collection management, including visiting and working in branches, weeding, assessing floating practices, creating branch displays, and facilitating branch staff training.
    • Attends professional conferences, activities, and staff meetings and actively serves on committees and obtains required training per calendar year. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Education & Experience:
    • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited university
      • Consideration will be given to individuals currently pursuing a master's degree in Library Science and will be completing the degree within the next four (4) months
      • Proof of completion of the degree will be required for permanent status in the position
    • One (1) year of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving
    • One (1) year of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for children and adults in a learning or leadership environment 
    OR
    • Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university
    • Two (2) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving
    • Two (2) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for children and adults in a learning or leadership environment  
    OR
    • Associates degree in any field or 60 hours of secondary education credits from an accredited college or university
    • Four (4) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving
    • Four (4) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for children and adults in a learning or leadership environment  
    OR
    • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
    • Six (6) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving
    • Six (6) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for children and adults in a learning or leadership environment

    • Position generally scheduled Monday - Friday; occasionally weekend work.
    • Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department.
    Salary:
    • $30.57 Per Hour
    • Paid Biweekly

     

    Work Environment and Physical Demands: 
    • This job operates in a professional office environment.
    • This role routinely uses standard office equipment suh as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
    • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required.
    • This would require the ability to lift files up to 20 pounds, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary.
