    Position Description

    Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

    Librarian I - Young Adult (Kingwood Branch) Overview:

    This position is responsible for identifying and interpreting user needs; planning and implementing a variety of young adult programs to encourage library usage and to foster community relations; providing exceptional customer service, reference, readers' advisory, and maker space activities; and assisting Library patrons in the use of library services, facilities, and equipment. Exemplify the high standards and expectations for the library system in its daily operations and services.

     

    Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Plan, coordinate, and promote young adult program services, including summer reading, special projects and other special events
    • Identify information needs in the community and plans and provides services to meet these needs
    • Responsible for Maker activities
    • Develop and sustain partnerships with local schools and organizations in serving young adult services customers
    • Develop a highly-visible public relations program for youth services in the community
    • Attends Staff meetings, activities, and/or professional conferences and actively serves on committees
    • Implements knowledge of current library trends in young adult services, programs, and maker space initiatives
    • Contributes to the development and maintenance of the library collection through awareness of current young adult literature
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience:
    • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited university
      • Consideration will be given to individuals currently pursuing a master's degree in Library Science and will be completing the degree within the next four (4) months.
      • Proof of completion of the degree will be required for permanent status in the position.
    • One (1) year of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
    • One (1) year of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educating activities for young adults
    OR
    • Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university
    • Two (2) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
    • Two (2) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educating activities for young adults
    OR
    • Associates degree in any field or 60 hours of secondary education credits from an accredited college or university
    • Four (4) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
    • Four (4) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educating activities for young adults
    OR
    • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
    • Six (6) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
    • Six (6) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educating activities for young adults
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
    • Ability to work well with public and staff members
    • Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
    • Proficient with the Internet and Office 365
    • Must use personal mobile device for the Multifactor Authentication process

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:  
    • This job typically operates in a professional office environment. 
    • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. 
    • At times, work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes. 
    • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

     

    Physical Demands:
    • Some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
