    Position Description

    Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

    Librarian I - Cataloging (Library Administration) Overview:

    The Catalog Librarian (Librarian I), under the supervision of the Cataloging and Processing Manager, performs cataloging and classification of items. The Catalog Librarian is expected to work both independently and with other staff to execute varying service priorities for the HCPL system.

     

    Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Catalogs library materials in all formats including original cataloging and electronic resources in an online environment according to department standards
    • Loads and provides quality control feedback for vendor cataloging
    • Assists with regular maintenance of online catalog database
    • Responds in a timely and professional manner to work e-mail regarding staff inquiries
    • Assists with special projects as required
    • Attends professional conferences, activities, and staff meetings and actively serves on committees and obtains required training per calendar year
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education:
    • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited university
    Experience:
    • One (1) year of experience in cataloging using Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) 
    Additional Requirements:
    • Unofficial copies of transcripts are required along with the application
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Familiarity with Resource Description and Access (RDA), Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC coding), and Dewey Decimal Classification 
    • Detail oriented - Great communication skills (written & verbal)
    • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)
    • Must use your personal mobile device for our Multifactor Authentication process
