    Librarian - Cataloging (Non-Civil Service)

    This position is responsible for providing cataloging and metadata for general, special and digital collections, in all formats, in all subject areas, and in different languages as required. Fluency in other languages is not required, but the research skills necessary to recreate non-Latin alphabets for cataloging is vital. The cataloger will input data into the library's electronic catalog to ensure that customers can find and access both physical materials and digital objects. The ideal cataloger should be able to communicate effectively with a variety of staff via e-mail, phone, and in-person. In addition, they should demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, consistent judgment, adaptability, and accuracy in their work. The cataloger will also be involved in the creation of digital repository objects and their associated metadata and will contribute to workflow refinement of the process over time.

    Essential Functions

    Required to know before beginning the job 

    • Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2) and Resource Description & Access (RDA).
    • MARC 21 Formats for Bibliographic Data.
    • Printed Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and/or WebDewey.
    • Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).
    • Library of Congress Genre Headings
    • OCLC Connexion, including authorities.

     Required to learn on the job

    • Polaris ILS, Simply Reports, Collection HQ & MARCEdit.
    • Report creation and manipulation of ILS data.
    • Familiarity with the department's vendor outsourcing specifications, the City of Dallas's documentation, and local cataloging practices and procedures.
    • City of Dallas and DPL policies and procedures.
    • Workflow of a centralized technical services department for a large public library system.
    • Management of shelf-ready materials, including how to input large batch loads of vendor records while maintaining quality control within the catalog.
    • Accurate maintenance of OCLC Holdings.
    • Creation and management of authority records.
    • Bibframe vocabulary, Linked Data principles, and other related emerging metadata trends.

     Job Duties & Skills

    • Provide excellent internal customer service to branch and unit staff members by addressing a variety of questions relating to materials, and by providing solutions for cataloging issues.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues to implement local metadata schema to promote access to a variety of library materials. May develop crosswalks and metadata application profiles to process access to the library's digitized and born-digital materials.
    • Provide catalog records for new and reinstated materials, using both copy and original cataloging.
    • Create and edit authority records.
    • General database maintenance and clean-up. 
    • Assist in the review and preparation of vendor specifications, and of the ISO 9001 and OHSA documentation of departmental procedures.
    • Maintain the cataloging department's manual and forms.
    • Attend library meetings and training sessions.
    • Keep abreast of the latest professional changes and their impact on workflow.
    • May participate in library committees.
    • May attend professional meetings and interact with staff from other libraries.
    • Other duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education Required:                
    MLS from ALA accredited program
     
    Experience Preferred:             
    Two (2) years of experience working in  library cataloging.

    The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
