The DeSoto Public Library has an opening for a Technical Services librarian position! DeSoto is in the Best Southwest area of the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex. Our library is also in a consortium with three other area libraries.
Description
The purpose of this position is to manage the technology functions and services of the library. This is accomplished by directing activities and tasks related to the delivery of technology services, monitoring and managing computer hardware and software, act as the liaison with the IT department and technology vendors, supervising and scheduling staff who deliver technology services to patrons, and supporting the technology needs of other library departments.
The position requires developing policies and procedures for managing library technology and advising the library director on the acquisition or de-acquisition of library technology; oversight of library technical services staff responsible for processing acquisitions and maintaining catalog records. Other duties include supporting the library’s general customer service and programming endeavors as part of a team-focused approach to the delivery of library services.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Manages information technology activities by developing webpages, researching and reviewing websites, coordinating internet service activities and subscriptions, setting up and maintaining automation systems, developing and maintaining procedures manuals, training staff, troubleshooting hardware, and software issues, completing reports of activities, and compiling data and inventories.
- Maintains the library’s collection by compiling updated information; working with vendor records for physical and digital content; entering data; running reports; and providing data as needed.
- Supervises programs and services by participating in hiring, developing, and implementing programs and services, scheduling, assigning, reviewing and evaluating staff and volunteer tasks, monitoring activities, investigating complaints, comments, and suggestions, and approving time and attendance.
- Assists with library consortium; acts as the liaison between ILS vendor and consortia members.
- Provides technical support to other library co-workers for special events or other programs.
- Works any public service desk by assisting patrons with software and hardware assistance, checking materials in and out, answering questions, responding to general inquiries, placing items on hold, interfacing with other libraries for materials, compiling and reporting statistics, troubleshooting library equipment, ordering supplies, and collecting fines.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited university
- Two years of related experience
Supplemental Information
- Knowledge of cataloging standards in an automated library system
- Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials
- Ability to present programs and materials to the public, both internally and externally
- Skill in the operation, use, and troubleshooting of hardware and peripherals plus standard office software, which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products
- Familiarity with emerging technologies
- Familiarity with maintaining social media platforms
