    Position Description

     

    Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

    Coordinator II, Innovation Labs Programming (Administrative Offices) Overview:
    The Coordinator II of the Innovation Labs coordinates and supports the state-of-the-art maker machines (3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills, vinyl cutters, etc.) throughout the Harris County Public Library (HCPL) system. The Coordinator II's primary responsibilities include oversight of the innovation labs at HCPL Administrative Offices, the go-to person for support and leadership of branch staff members to ensure consistency in maker programs offered by the organization and hands-on instruction for both staff members and patrons.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Coordinates the Maker Innovation Lab at HCPL Administrative Offices, including developing and delivering training classes for staff and patrons. Selects maker themed collection materials for circulation through the Maker Innovation Lab at HCPL Administrative Offices and through Maker Central outreach events. 
    • Performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on computers and equipment, and operating maker equipment including, but not limited to, 3D printers, laser cutters, and other lab equipment.
    • Collaborates with branch library teams in developing and delivering maker services and building out maker lab equipment, and provides consultation, training, and instruction as needed. 
    • Participates and contributes to regular meetings and training events with branch staff.
    • Develops policies and procedures for maker services and activities throughout the HCPL system and refer them for approval.
    • Works in collaboration with community organizations for maker partnerships.
    • Participates in outreach events in the community
    • Research maker trends, technology, and products to develop and lead new and relevant library system programs and services for a variety of public audiences.
    • Assists with all duties related to the Programming, Partnerships, and Outreach Division as needed.
    • Driving to branches and partnership locations.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Education, Instructional Engineering, Instructional Design, Instructional or Educational Technology, or a related field
    • One (1) year of library operation and program experience with 3D printer hardware, design software, laser cutter and engraver, coding, and basic robotics activities for all ages.
    OR
    • Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Education, Instructional Engineering, Instructional Design, Instructional or Educational Technology, or a related field
    • Three (3) years of library operation and program experience with 3D printer hardware, design software, laser cutter and engraver, coding, and basic robotics activities for all ages. 
    OR
    • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
    • Five (5) years of library operation and program experience with 3D printer hardware, design software, laser cutter and engraver, coding, and basic robotics activities for all ages.
     
    WITH:
    • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties 
    Additional Requirements:

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Knowledge of 3D printer hardware, design software, laser cutter and engraver, coding, and basic robotics. Knowledge of creative technologies, maker culture, and electronics fundamentals.
    • Knowledge of the Internet and standard Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Illustrator, and other creative applications. Knowledge of Arduino and Raspberry Pi or similar technology.
    • Skill in writing technical documentation and procedure manuals for various audiences, including nontechnical end users.
    • Ability to research, evaluate and recommend appropriate Maker equipment and software purchases.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, identify challenges and proactively work to find solutions. Ability to develop policies and procedures, including the safe use of all Maker tools and physical materials.
    • Ability to provide individual instruction and user support for Apple and personnel computer hardware or software, skill in teaching experience in a group or classroom setting.
    • Skill in soldering, sewing, CAD software, and sustainability for digital fabrication
    • Customer service oriented, possess good communication skills, enjoys working in a team environment.

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

    • Full-Time | Regular – 40 hours a week
    • Monday - Friday | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
    • Occasional weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required based on the specific needs and demands of the department. 
    Salary:
    • $23.15  Per Hour
    • Paid Biweekly
    Work Environment & Physical Demands:
    • This position is based in an office environment, where the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, scanners, and filing cabinets is routine.
    • The use of 3D printer hardware, design software, laser cutter and engraver, coding, and basic robotic kits will also be routine.
    • The role is predominantly sedentary, involving mainly sitting with occasional standing and walking.
    • The physical demands associated with occasional lifting and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
