    Position Description

    Under general supervision, provides reference and reader advisory services, plans, and presents programs for adults and participates in the collection development process for the adult collections.

    Examples of Duties

    • Provides reference and readers' advisory assistance to customers.
    • Provides instructions to customers in the use of the public access catalog, the library collection, databases, and use of the internet.
    • Evaluates and maintains an assigned area of the reference and adult materials collection.
    • Creates library publications, including bibliographies, instructional fliers, and other guides.
    • Plans, promotes, presents, and evaluates adult programs, including outreach services.
    • Publicizes library events and materials.
    • Schedules use of study rooms, program rooms, and public access computers.
    • Provides tours for community groups.
    • Plans displays, bulletin boards, bibliographies, and other informational materials.
    • Assists supervisor in preparing reports and departmental planning.
    • Assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures.
    • Attends and participates in professional meetings, conferences, seminars, and committees.
    • Maintains an awareness of adult literature services, reference sources, professional trends, methods, and ethics.
    • Serves as Librarian in charge in the absence of managerial staff.
    • Informs supervisor of all work activities.
    • Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Requirements
    Basic Qualifications
    • Must have an American Library Association accredited Master of Library or Information Services degree or be able to obtain degree within six months of hire.
    • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
    Work Experience
    • One (1) year of professional library experience is preferred.
    Desired Qualifications
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Able and willing to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
    • Must have working knowledge of adult literature and the practices and principles of modern public library operations.
    • Must have excellent English communicative skills, both oral and written, to include spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
    • Must be able to work independently, prioritize duties and tasks, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
    • Must maintain good relations with the public and staff, and demonstrate tact and courtesy in all situations.
    • Must be skilled in personal computer operations to include MS Office, computerized databases, social media, and downloadable e-books and audiobooks.
    • Must have experience with library automation.
    • Must operate office equipment as needed.
    • Must be able to handle multiple projects, prioritize and organize work assignments, meet deadlines, work well under pressure and stress, work various hours including weekends, and maintain a professional, pleasant, and friendly demeanor at all times.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Must be able to walk; bend; stoop; reach; climb; see; hear; talk; read; write; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift up to 25 lbs. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; and work in confined spaces.

    HOURS: 

    • Full-Time; 40 hours a week. 

    • Typical shifts are Day, Evening, Nights, Weekends, etc.
