The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Odessa, TX, is hiring for an Unit Assistant Director of Library.
This on-site Faculty Associate position is part of the Libraries of the Health Sciences at the Permian Basin and reports to the Unit Associate Director/Regional Library Director.
Position Description
Performs administrative and supervisory work related to the management of a specialized unit; usually reports to a Director. Responsibilities encompass the coordination of activities involved in the management of the unit or support services. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on attainment of established goals; may be responsible for supervision of all employees assigned to the unit of responsibility.
Major/Essential Functions
- Supports the Service Plus Philosophy of Texas Tech
- Manages Reference Services.
- Helps patrons locate library resources, mainly in electronic formats.
- Trains staff in using new database products.
- Provides quality evidence-based reference services to patrons.
- Looks for trends in user needs and responds with appropriate resources.
- Networks with fellow librarians for professional support and education.
- Takes continuing education classes to learn new research tools and databases.
- Teaches and Trains
- Provides instructional materials for patrons.
- Provides structured classes for both groups and individuals on use of library resources.
- Participates in journal clubs, grand rounds, and didactics for intramural communication and training.
- Treats customers in a kind, courteous manner.
Occasional Duties
- Manages the library in absence of the Unit Associate Director.
- Communicates issues to Unit Associate Director and, if necessary, to the Managing Director, and Executive Director.
- Outreach: Prepare support materials for exhibits, displays, etc.
- Teaches and train public NLM products and TTUHSC offerings.
- Prepares in advance for outreach trips.
- Displays exhibits for fairs and conventions. Teaches and network with general public.
- Prepare for and conduct talks, when able to, at Internal Medicine's journal clubs and didactics. Mainly involves
- promoting a library resource or database as well as assisting with research on cases.
- Regular attendance every two weeks at IM didactics and journal clubs.
- Unit Associate Director will fill-in as needed.
- Contributes to the knowledge base of the profession.
- Contributions can include, but not limited to: committee work, letters, editorials, posters, lightning talks, round tables, panel discussions, papers, research, CE instruction, book chapters, resource reviews, or articles.
- Promotes 3D Makerspace.
- Promote 3D makerspace; accommodate requests by students, residents and faculty; assist, as needed, managing director of Methodology Lab in teaching SOM 4th-year elective, "Thinking in 3D"; willing to obtain new, related skills, plus keep-up with trends in the field.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area required plus four years progressively responsible supervisory experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree from an ALA accredited program.
- Demonstrates knowledge of ALA Core Competencies and Code of Ethics plus Library Bill of Rights.
- Enjoys working with diverse population.
- Able to work independently, as well as with people.
- Able to anticipate problems, and be able to solve problems on a day-to-day basis.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Able to be respectful of differences, and have the ability to see problems from a variety of perspectives.
- Must be able to perform to the highest degree of standards.
- Organization and detailed minded orientation is necessary. Also, Computer
- literate, and the ability to manage people and projects, plus have a basic knowledge of medical/health informatics.
