    JOB SUMMARY

    The Lower School Librarian, PreK-2nd is a full-time 9.5-month position and reports directly to the Director of Libraries. In addition to maintaining print and electronic materials to foster a love of reading and learning, the Lower School Librarian partners with teachers to develop a dynamic curriculum which meets the programmatic mission to prepare students who think, communicate, collaborate, and create.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

             Plans, conducts, and evaluates library classes for all grade levels from PreK 3 (3 year olds' class) through second grade, in collaboration with classroom teachers.

             Assists teachers in integrating library services and instruction with classroom learning.

             Teaches students how to use resources in the library and select books appropriate for their reading levels and interests.

             Maintains a schedule that is flexible and accessible to students and faculty.

             Evaluates how new and existing library resources can aid classroom needs.

             Supports student development of attitudes, habits and skills leading to lifelong learning and good citizenship. 

             Conducts small group and individual instruction in information skills, research strategies and use of library equipment.

             Prepares bibliographies and resource lists to support class assignments and encourage reading.

             Provides reference and readers' advisory services to the general student population.

             Provides professional development for the faculty in such areas as new information technologies and information literacy.

             Advises teachers, students and administrators of new library materials.

             Assesses faculty input on new services and materials; collaborates with the Director of Libraries about needs.

             Plans short/long term program goals to encourage reading and learning.

             Develops and maintains access to a balanced collection of print and electronic resources for use by students, faculty and parents.

             The use of technology in instruction is an expectation as well as being able to provide a basic level of support to students using classroom devices including iPads and Chromebooks. Additionally, candidates should be proficient in utilizing technology for administrative functions including, but not limited to resource sharing and communications. 

             Creates an environment where students feel safe, respected, and empowered.

             Assists the Director of Libraries as directed.

             Promotes the school's statement of mission and philosophy.


    MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

    ·      Attends Staff Development Meetings 

    ·      Attends Chapel

    ·      Attends Division Meetings

    ·      Attends Department & Team Meetings, as needed

    ·      Attends school events such as Lower School Night, Admission Open House

     


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    No supervisory duties assigned. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. May supervise and direct parent volunteers in appropriate tasks.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience:

         Master's Degree in Library Services (MLS) and experience in a school library at lower levels is preferred 

         Computer proficiency, including MS Word and MS Excel or their equivalent products in the Google Apps for Education Suite

    Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must have excellent communication and computer skills; tact in dealing with students and teachers at all levels.  Interest in child development; ability to create an inviting, child-friendly environment.  Ability to use current and innovative pedagogy and technology.   The candidate should be inquisitive, personable, flexible, energetic, and collegial.
